Carpenter and Cook

Visited Carpenter and Cook during their "soft opening". A dear friend of mine suggested that we should make a trip there after finding about it through some food blog (can't remember the name of it at the moment). True to the pictures we saw on the blog, Carpenter and Cook is a really quaint and gorgeous place filled with vintage knick-knacks with personal touches like little vases of fresh flowers on every table. Carpenter and Cook is both a cafe and a furniture store which means that all the nice vintage items you see are for sale! So if you see something you really like, you can actually bring the item home! The whole cafe/store is filled with so much whimsicality which really reminds me of those dainty women baking in their pretty 60s kitchen making magical-tasting cakes and breads. Actually, the place kind of reminds me of a scene from Pleasantville.

The food they offer are mostly baked goods and some sandwiches. The savory ones like quiche and brioche usually come with a side salad. The sweet ones are mostly made up of tarts and some cakes.

I think ordered the quiche lorraine which costs around $6 if I didn't remember wrongly. The quiche was really good! Nice buttery crust and nicely flavoured filling. However, portions are rather small so I guess this cafe is really more suitable for small bites than a substantial meal.

We also ordered the lemon tart. It was pretty good too. Thin crumbly crust and the lemon custard was just alright, not overly sour or sweet. However, I did notice that it has an "eggy" undertone to it. Wanted to try the passion fruit tart but it was sold out that day. :(

Lastly, we had the plum frangipane tart. It was not bad. The crust was thin too and as all frangipane tarts are I guess they tend to be a bit crumbly because of the almonds. Personally, I would prefer ordering the lemon tart over the frangipane tart on my next visit as the former is more alluring for me.

Carpenter and Cook is definitely a nice place to hang out with your girlfriends and every nicely furnished corner of the shop is just perfect for taking pictures. It's located along a rather quiet street of the Bukit Timah area, but I forsee that area becoming more crowded as more people get to know about this cafe in addition to the already-popular Udders and Kim's family restaurant which are also situated in the same row of shops.
